What Actually Survives Out There
Cameras and access control gear that work in the marketing photos do not always survive in a Pueblo dust storm or a Colorado Springs cold snap. Six things we plan around for every install.
South-facing sun glare
Cameras pointed south or west into the afternoon sun routinely produce washed-out footage that does not hold up in court. We pre-walk every install with a compass, mount cameras under eaves or in shade where possible, and pick sensors with the dynamic range to handle high-glare conditions on south-facing buildings off Powers and along I-25.
Sub-freezing winter nights
Outdoor cameras in Pueblo and Colorado Springs see overnight lows well below freezing from November through March. Consumer cameras crack lenses, lose IR illumination, and brown out on cold-start. We deploy commercial UniFi G5 Bullet and Pro models rated for the temperature range, with heaters on critical license-plate and gate cameras.
Wind and dust off the plains
East Pueblo, the Cimarron Hills corridor, and jobsites in Falcon and Peyton sit in the dust pattern coming off the plains. Wind-loaded dust kills consumer camera fans inside a year. We mount in proper IP66+ housings, run a quarterly cleaning task on the maintenance schedule, and choose camera bodies with no moving cooling parts where possible.
Evidence-grade footage
Cameras meant for insurance claims and court evidence need correct angle, shutter, lens, and sensor for the role. Overview cameras provide context. License-plate cameras at gates need exposure tuned for headlight wash. Evidence cameras at choke points need 15+ pixels per inch on faces. We document the camera role on the floor plan and tune each one to that role.
Pikes Peak Regional Building Department
Commercial access control work in Colorado Springs falls under PPRBD permitting. Low-voltage cabling under 50V is generally exempt under C.R.S. 12-115-116, but life-safety integrations (panic hardware on access-controlled doors) require closer coordination. We pull the permits where required and document compliance for the building inspector.
No subscription camera storage
UniFi Protect runs on-premise on a UNVR appliance and stores footage locally. Cloud sync is optional. We do not bill recurring storage fees for camera footage. The appliance and drives are a one-time CAPEX, and footage retention scales by adding drives, not by paying a per-camera per-month cloud bill that grows with the system.
